Dragon Ball Juicy Steamed Buns (DBZ: Kakarot)
Comfort Food Mains · Medium

Dragon Ball Super: Battle of Gods turned takoyaki into a planet-saving stunt — Vegeta cooking frantically with a giant octopus to calm Lord Beerus is one of anime’s loudest food memes. This recipe targets that fan energy, not generic street food SEO.
Osaka pros flood the entire plate with batter, bury tako, tenkasu, beni shoga, and scallion in the wells, then tuck the overflow back in while rotating — that is how you get full spheres, not hollow half-moons. An electric takoyaki maker or cast-iron plate is non-negotiable for home cooks.
Yield: about 20 balls total, written as 4 servings of 5 balls (~420 kcal per serving in our schema estimate). Rest the batter 30 minutes, work in batches, and finish with sauce, Kewpie, aonori, and katsuobushi only on the outside.

In a large bowl whisk 2 cups (480 ml) cold dashi, 2 large eggs, 1½ cups (190 g) all-purpose flour, 1 tsp baking powder, and ½ tsp kosher salt until smooth — a few lumps are fine.
Cover the bowl and rest at room temperature 30 minutes so the starch hydrates while you prep the fillings.
Cut 6 oz (170 g) cooked octopus into bite-size dice. Finely chop 2 tbsp beni shoga, slice 3 scallions, and measure ½ cup tenkasu for the wells. Set 1 cup katsuobushi, 2 tbsp aonori, ¼ cup (60 ml) tonkatsu sauce, and 3 tbsp Kewpie mayonnaise aside for finishing only.
Brush the wells of an electric takoyaki maker (or oiled cast-iron takoyaki plate) with 2 tbsp neutral oil and preheat until a drop of batter sets in a few seconds.
Pour batter generously so it overfills each well and pools across the plate — not level with the rim. Into every well add octopus, a pinch of scallion, a little beni shoga, and tenkasu.
When the bottom sets (1–2 minutes), use two bamboo skewers to rotate each ball 90° and push the excess batter from the flat areas down into the wells. Keep turning and tucking until the balls are closed golden spheres — about 8–10 minutes per batch.
Pile hot takoyaki on a large white platter. Drizzle tonkatsu sauce and Kewpie in crossing lines, shower with aonori, and mound katsuobushi so it moves from the heat. Do not add beni shoga on top — it already cooked inside.
Do not fill only to the rim — pour until batter bridges the wells, scatter fillings, then use two bamboo skewers to draw a grid and push the extra batter into each hole as you rotate 90° at a time. Mix tenkasu and beni shoga into the wells with the octopus; pickled ginger belongs inside the cooked ball, not on top with the mayo. Preheat the electric takoyaki maker until a test drop sets in seconds.
Takoyaki is best eaten immediately. Leftover balls refrigerate 1 day and re-crisp in a hot oiled skillet, then re-garnish with fresh bonito, sauce, and mayo.
